The Screwdriver : The Classic Cocktail, not the tool.

The Screwdriver cocktail is one of the simplest and most classic mixed drinks ever created—made with just vodka and orange juice. Despite its simplicity, the Screwdriver offers a refreshing balance of crisp spirit and naturally sweet citrus. The drink’s appeal lies in its versatility: it can be enjoyed as a brunch staple, a casual afternoon refresher, or a light evening cocktail. The combination of smooth vodka and bright orange juice makes it both easy to sip and approachable for all palates.

Historically, the Screwdriver has roots that trace back to American engineers working overseas in the mid-20th century. According to popular lore, oil workers in the Persian Gulf would discreetly add vodka to their orange juice while on the job. Lacking proper bar tools, they stirred their drinks with whatever was available—often a screwdriver, which ultimately gave the cocktail its memorable name. Over time, the drink spread worldwide, becoming a bar menu essential for its refreshing simplicity and easy preparation.

Food-wise, the Screwdriver pairs best with dishes that complement its citrus-forward profile. It works beautifully with breakfast and brunch foods such as omelets, pancakes, bacon, and savory breakfast sandwiches. The acidity of the orange juice enhances seafood, especially shrimp, light fish dishes, and sushi. It also pairs surprisingly well with salty snacks like pretzels, nuts, charcuterie, or buttery pastries—the kind of foods that benefit from a bright, fruity counterbalance. The Screwdriver’s clean, refreshing character makes it a flexible companion for meals that are light, fresh, or slightly salty.
